The
Riverdale Police Department employs a total of nine
dispatchers, four of which are full-time, and five
which are part-time. These people are assigned to provide
24 hour radio, telephone and computer emergency services
to the borough and its police officers. |

Candidates
for the position of police communications operator
must meet certain criteria including: completion of
high school or GED equivalency, submission of a Borough
of Riverdale employment application and an oral interview.
In addition, finalists will have to undergo a thorough
background check. The final determination for hiring
is made by the chief of police.
All
persons hired as police radio communications operators
are placed in an extensive initial training phase
that includes work on both day and night shifts. During
this training the employee will be given the information
and hands on experience necessary to successfully
operate:
Upon
completion of the initial training requirements, new
communications operators are assigned to a specific
shift and receive ongoing training in several
areas. In addition, radio communications operators
are trained in first aid procedures and public relations.
The job of radio communications operator with the
Riverdale Police Department is varied and demanding.
Our communications staff operate a multichannel
police and emergency services radio system. We provide
communications services for police and fire for the
Borough of Riverdale. Communications operators also
answer the emergency and non-emergency telephones.
They are responsible for information gathering, prioritizing
and dispatching calls on an ongoing basis.
As
part of their duties, communication operators have
a good deal of contact with the public. For this reason
emphasis is placed on developing good communications
skills and a strong customer satisfaction attitude
in all of our personnel.
