The
Riverdale Police Bike Unit, which was established
in August of 2005, was implemented for the purpose
of patrolling the borough parks, soccer fields and
baseball fields, business district, assist in street
fairs and concerts, residential neighborhoods, and
to interact with the residents and public in general.
The new will give officers the opportunity to have
greater contact with the public and offer more of
an opportunity for interaction with residents. The
idea for the unit originated with Ptl. DiGirolamo,
an avid mountain biker, who felt establishing a bike
unit would enhance police presence in the community.

We
are very appreciative of Tilcon Quarry, ROC Enterprises
of Maywood, and Garden Commercial Properties of Short
Hills, who donated the money used to purchase the
three brand new bicycles and necessary equipment.
The bikes are equipped with basic first aid kits should
the need arise. Currently, Ptl. DiGirolamo, who initiated
the program, along with Sgt. Biro, Ptl. Keil, and Ptl. Roemmele have all been certified
by completing a 32 hour basic mountain bike policing
course given at Mountain Lakes Police Dept. Eventually,
we hope to have all officers certified for bike patrol.
